Mountain bike riding styles change. Terrain where mountain bikes are ridden continues to evolve. As a result, mountain bike design continues to change with it. To keep pace with the modern rider and the variety of terrain that riders now enjoy, Niner went back to the drawing board and reimagined the JET 9 RDO and RIP 9 RDO trail bikes. The goal? Improve a rider’s balance and body position while still maintaining the suspension quality Niner is known for. Using [R]Evolution geometry, these renewed bikes handle better, climb better and descend better than their worthy predecessors. And, they ratchet up the fun.
JET 9 RDO
Quick. Light. Playful. The JET 9 RDO is the ticket to fly. The [R]Evolution geometry centers the rider in the cockpit. This balances the handling and allows the pilot to tackle whatever terrain appears on the trail. The CVA linkage offers great traction, no matter the direction. And with 120mm of travel, chunky sections can be taken with confidence.
RIP 9 RDO
Burly. Fast. Capable. As the name implies, the RIP 9 RDO encourages hard charging. Want to send it straight through the rough stuff and hit bigger lines? No problem. The RIP 9 RDO tackles tough terrain going up or coming down. The CVA suspension system gives amazing pedaling efficiency for bike that sports 150mm of rear travel. And, as the name implies, the real fun starts once the saddle drops and the front wheel lets gravity take over.
[R]Evolution geometry sits at the heart of Niner’s trail bikes. We lengthened the top tube. This gives the rider a roomier cockpit. We shortened the stems. This improved the handling and maneuverability so the rider can mob through rock gardens and barrel big berms. We shortened the chainstays. This gives the rider faster acceleration and the bike a lively, playful feel. We steepened the seat tube angle. This keeps the overall feel of the bikes well-rounded and ensures efficient climbing and pedaling. Overall, the rider is more centered on the bike and is able to stay on top of their gear when cranking hard.
27.5 PLUS COMPATIBILITY
From the early days of Niner, we set out to change the face of mountain biking. Our approach to the sport and the 29-inch wheeled bikes we made were a great first step in what we saw as an evolution of modern riding.
But a lot has changed. When we first started building bikes, there were two choices, 26 or 29-inch wheels. It was a black and white world. And then, things changed. 27.5 inch wheels entered the scene. And 29 plus. And now 27.5 plus. Even fat bikes took the world by storm for a minute. So, who knows what will come next?
Niner [R]Evolution puts everything back on the table—bike geometry, handling and even the way components are integrated into the overall design, including wheels and wheel sizes.
Since day one, Niner has always embraced change when it means improving the performance of our bikes. Advances in technology enable us to take new approaches to design and engineering, especially when it comes to the evolution of wheel dimensions. We recognize 27.5-inch plus wheels and tires provide benefits to traction and handling that many riders want, so we’ve embraced it. We have worked to optimize our frame design to accommodate 29-inch and 27.5-inch plus wheels. This approach gives wheelset options to the rider rather than forcing them to own two different bikes.
CVA SUSPENSION: TRIED AND TRUE
Our Constant Varying Arc (CVA) suspension platform remains the steady foundation for our full suspension bikes. But how can this technology keep pace with the ever-changing “standards” in today’s mountain bike world? Unlike so many suspension systems out there that are based on optimal chainring-to-pivot point configurations, CVA relies on counteracting linkage forces that are not dependent on specific pivot locations. The bottom linkage is pulled downward during pedaling to negate squat, while the upward rotating top linkage is left free to react to terrain changes. This makes for a ride that is efficient, fun and fully active, all the time. And, it allows us to dial in the suspension regardless of frame size.
FUN IS WHERE IT’S AT
Let’s face it, if you’re in the market for a new trail bike, you want something that puts a bigger smile on your face. Our redesigned trail bikes pair [R]Evolution geometry with our CVA suspension system. Riders float up technical climbs with tons of traction and fly over everything else.
