A bike without an easy niche except for those riders who are quite certain it’s the best bike on the planet – those converts who choose the WFO 9 to confidently dissect bike parks and black diamonds every weekend. This bike has changed how a lot of riders view long-travel 29ers, evoling from an outlier in the Niner lineup to a bike whose time has come. With trail bikes becoming more and more capable, we’ve shoved the new WFO 9 off the “all mountain” fence firmly into gravity territory. Lower. Slacker. More Travel. So, grab your music, Leatt and full-face before you roll out the door.

While the WFO 9 is an efficient pedaler and will do AM magic under those who have the legs for the climbs, it’s when you adjust your goggles and drop in that it truly shines. You might imagine that the bike’s 150MM of travel puts it into a familiar category of bikes, but it doesn’t ride that way. Coming from a trail bike, the WFO 9 will feel big and capable. If you spend time on DH bikes you will instantly feel at home, except the WFO 9 is likely several pounds lighter than your DH setup. That’s a few extra laps and a few spots higher on any leader board. The long wheelbase puts you in charge of where the bike goes and if you’ve ever had trouble carrying enough speed into that set of 30’ tables, prepare yourself for some hair-raising-shit-eating-grin-overshooting-to- HYFR.

The big wheels bring the kind of speed through the chop and stability in the air that any rider will benefit from. Whips? Snap hard and get sideways. Scrubs? Push a bit earlier to break the increased traction and get the bike down. The wheels stay out of the holes on techy lines, allowing you to get away with 6” of travel in serious clenching moments that just wouldn’t be fun on a trail bike. Float down your favorite trail and wonder when they made it easier. They didn’t.

Bottom line is, all those guys who said 29 will never be fun on big terrain were just plain wrong. That’s okay though, we weren’t sure ourselves when we made the first WFO 9 in 2009. But we’ve done our homework and the new WFO 9 redefines what a Niner can do.

The WFO 9 features Niner’s patented CVA™ suspension (U.S. Patent No. 7,934,739) and delivers 150mm of fully active travel with superb compliance and damping via a tuned for CVA™ RockShox Monarch Plus RC3 shock. AIRFORMED TUBING
The next installment of Niner’s airformed trilogy is complete. Shaping the WFO 9 frame tubes with compressed air in a heated mold gives us greater control over wall thickness and material uniformity, allowing the use of less metal. The new WFO 9 is over 300g lighter than its predecessor – total Medium frame weight is 7.3lbs (no Maxle or seat collar) compared to 8lbs (no Maxle or seat collar) for the old model.

TAPERED HEADTUBE
The increased surface area of a tapered headtube allows for a larger downtube, increasing strength and rigidity at this critical intersection. Tapered fork steerer tubes measurably reduce fork deflection, which means your WFO 9 tracks straight and true. 29 POLLICI A LUNGA ESCURSIONE
Abbiamo pensato a tutte le situazioni in cui i riders potessero trarre beneficio da un’escursione di 5.5 pollici abbinata a ruote da 29” e così abbiamo progettato la W.F.O. 9. A pesar que, aparentemente, el sistema CVA se asemeja a otras suspensiones, CVA destaca por su funcionamiento, trabajando de forma muy distinta al resto. El sistema está orientado a aislar las fuerzas que generamos al pedalear en cualquiera de la situaciones y a sacarles el mayor rendimiento. Muchos de los diseños actuales, especialmente aquellos que utilizan la suspensión paralela como punto de partida, basan su eficiencia mediante la previsión de que la mayor parte de la fuerza de transmisión procederá del plato mediano y se diseñan en base a ese criterio, lo que termina derivando en fuerzas laterales cuando la cadena no se ubica en el plato mediano o cuando utilizamos un conjunto 2x10. Un buen diseño es directamente proporcional a la disipación de dichas fuerzas laterales.

La suspensión CVA consigue aislar la fuerza que generamos al pedalear gracias a los engranajes de su sistema y al hecho que el "Instant Center" de la suspensión esté ubicado por delante de la transmisión. Con el pivote inferior situado debajo de la caja de pedalier, la fuerza en el eje trasero (que surge como resultado de la tensión de la cadena) tira de ambos engranajes en direcciones opuestas para aislar eficazmente el tren motriz del triángulo trasero.

La estudiada compresión de la suspensión se produce gracias a la trayectoria del eje que se mueve hacia la parte interior en un arco gradual constante garantizando, para todos los desarrollos, la correcta tensión de la cadena y reduciendo los problemas derivados de una incorrecta transmisión.

Le biciclette Niner equipaggiate con il sistema CVA hanno ricevuto elogi sia sui forum on-line, sia sulle riviste di settore di tutto il mondo.

Anche se a prima vista il CVA può assomigliare ad altri sistemi presenti sul mercato, quello che lo contraddistingue è il modo in cui funziona, ovvero isola le forze indotta dal movimento di pedalata e permette di avere una sospensione sempre attiva, in qualunque situazione. Molti degli attuali sistemi di sospensione, soprattutto alcuni a parallelogramma, tendono a massimizzare l’efficienza supponendo che per la maggior parte del tempo il rider pedali con la corona mediana, e sono quindi progettati attorno a questo punto di infulcro virtuale. Il tutto si traduce nel fatto che ci sarà sempre un compromesso, per quanto concerne la pedalabilità, quando NON viene utilizzata la corona mediana o quando si utilizza un sistema 2x10. Migliore è quindi la progettazione, meno si noterà il fenomeno appena menzionato.

Al fine di isolare le forze indotta dalla pedalata, con qualunque rapporto si scelga, il centro istantaneo del sistema CVA si colloca in posizione frontale rispetto alla guarnitura. Con lo snodo inferiore posto al di sotto del movimento centrale, le forze sull’asse posteriore, risultanti dalla tensione della catena, fanno muovere le due bielle in direzioni opposte, qualunque sia il rapporto utilizzato, il che, di fatto, isola la trasmissione dal carro. In parole povere, quando si pedala, la catena spinge la biella inferiore verso il basso e lontano dalla scatola movimento centrale, mentre la biella superiore si muove lungo il suo naturale percorso arcuato. Dato che il carro posteriore è un pezzo unico, le due forze appena citate si annullano a vicenda, lasciando che la coppia indotta dalla catena vada a far ruotare la ruota posteriore, che è quanto di più desiderabile si possa volere.
